The Cheshire Cat Cap is a black 59Fifty style cap with the Cheshire Cat’s highlighting his grinning expression. His eyes are bright blue giving the hat to stand out with his detailed white grin. For the rest of the cap it displays strategically detailed designs which make the hat look like the Cheshire Cat’s fur. On the back of the cap there is a spiraling saying “Most everyone’s mad here. You may have noticed that I’m not all there myself.”

Eat me Drink me cap

This black 59Fifty style cap has the slogan “Eat me Drink me” on the front of the cap with a sketched table set as the background behind “Eat me” and a sketched whiskey bottle with a cork set as the background behind “Drink me”. On the back of the cap, there is a skeleton shaped key hole displayed.

Mad Hatter cap

The green 59Fifty style cap has “The Mad Hatter” in white and orange text on the front of the cap. On the back of the cap features a scroll like design with the text embroidered “Mad asa Hatter.”  The bottom of the brim is where the real art work is. The detailed sketched design of the Mad Hatter is seen with several of sketched hats placed around him.

Off With His Head cap

This black 59Fifty style cap has the Red and White knights jousting with their spaded shaped spears (on front). On the back of the cap, splattered blood is seen with the slogan “Off With His Head!” with the Queen of Hearts referenced.

Cool Stuff – NASA Garage Sale Includes Shuttles, Engines, Space Suits

January 21, 2010 Leave a comment

ksc-03pd-0204

Looking for a good deal during the recession? Space geeks don’t have to look any further than NASA, where they can pick up a retired space shuttle for the bargain-basement price of $28.8 million.

That’s the cost NASA estimates for shipping and handling on a space shuttle. The Space Shuttle Discovery has already been spoken for by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, but Atlantis and Endeavour are still available.

Not just anybody can buy them, however. NASA says because of the role the shuttles have played in the nation’s space program, “special attention is being given to ensure the shuttle orbiters are appropriately retired and displayed in the broadest interest of the American public.” That means Bill Gates or Sergei Brin probably can’t put one in the backyard.

The $28.8 million price tag is more than 30 percent off the original sticker price of $42 million NASA was asking in December of 2008. The space agency says it dropped the price because much of the original cost included work that is needed to decommission the shuttles even if they were only to be stored in a hangar.

NASA says the new price reflects the cost of transporting the space vehicles to their new locations and fixing them up so they are in proper display condition. More than 20 inquiries were received after the initial listing, but NASA expects others will step up now that the shuttles have been discounted. Technically, Atlantis and Endeavour are not for sale. They will remain property of NASA, but will be on permanent display at the new locations. The deadline for organizations to apply to adopt a shuttle is February 19.

In addition to the orbiters, NASA is also offering up surplus main engines from the space shuttle. And, it’s offering numerous other items are space-shuttle related (.pdf) to museums and educational institutions, including such items as flight-crew clothing and instruments that have been to space, as well as wind-tunnel models, mockups and simulators that never left the ground.

The fire sale extends beyond the shuttle program to include 2,500 items from the space program that are newly available, including space suits from Apollo and Mercury and other artifacts like an adorable model of a Gemini spacecraft.

Cool Stuff – Amazing Fan-Made "War Machine" Costume

January 5, 2010 Leave a comment

War Machine Fan Costume Header

I’ll admit it, I’m a fanboy.

My bathroom reading material of choice is a stack of comic books and my desk is littered with a mix of action figures, Legos, and a talking Captain Kirk figurine I got from Burger King. Still, I recognize that there are bigger and better nerds in the world than me. Take Anthony Le, for example. You see that War Machine costume he’s wearing in the picture above? He made it. As in, he made all of it. By himself.

Can you say awesome?

One of the reasons I love going to comic conventions is to see the various Cosplay that people have come up with. At Wizard World Chicago two years ago I saw an incredible Transformers 2-inspired Bumblebee costume, and just this past year I caught a pretty impressive Batman and Catwoman pair at Wonder-Con in San Francisco. Still, if the pictures Anthony shared at Superhero Hype do any justice to this War Machine costume in person, I’d have to say that this is the best piece of cosplay I’ve ever seen. (When Jon Favreau tweets about your costume, you know you’ve got something pretty special.)

I picked out some of my favorite pictures of Anthony “War Machine” Le in action, but I highly recommend checking out Superhero Hype for the rest.

And of course, after a hard day of saving the world, what does War Machine like to do? Sit back and relax with a cold brew.

What do you think of Anthony’s craftsmanship? Have you seen a better fan-made costume?
